Intended Letter to the Editor (not sure if I ever submitted it or not)

Walking my dog through my local woods last week, I considered writing a letter commenting on the amount of garbage I saw, and so was pleased to read a recent column about city trash.

The litter problem also exists in the wooded areas. I frequently stoop and scoop trash on our walks. I attribute this litter to extreme laziness – it’s easier to toss an empty coffee cup out the car window or drop a candy bar wrapper on the ground than take it home and dispose of it properly.

But I am completely mystified by another phenomenon.

Some of the stuff deposited at the park must have taken considerable effort: great piles of garden waste are being carefully placed at the foot entrances to the woods. Do these dumpers not realize that garden waste is actually picked up from in front of their homes?! Moreover these heaps of brush, grass and leaves do not readily decompose no matter how biodegradable they are. The Region  Waste Management Services does a much better job and then you can even go and pick up the by-product in the spring: free compost and wood chips.

I find it very perplexing.
